Activities Sponsored by Academic Departments
A number of student activities grow out of academic departments and enhance classroom work by providing opportunities for practical experience and training. Interested students should contact the chair of the appropriate department for more information. A partial list follows:

The President's Own Band of Blue, MTSU's marching band; Symphonic Band; Wind Ensemble; Concert Choir; Men's Chorale; Women's Chorale; MTSU Singers; Schola Cantorum; String Ensemble; Middle Tennessee Symphony; MTSU Orchestra; Jazz Ensemble; Chamber Choir; Brass Ensemble; Woodwind Ensemble; Guitar Ensemble; Percussion Ensemble; Steel Drum Band; Opera Workshop; and Commercial Music Ensemble are all organizations of student performers. University Theatre Five major dramatic productions annually as well as the maintenance of a touring company and a children's theatre company provide for the application of classroom theory and performance experience. For more information, call (615) 898-2640.
Forensics Some 20 competitive tournaments are scheduled with universities throughout the nation from October through April. Annual on-campus public debates are also sponsored. Call (615) 898-2640 for more information.

Two radio stations and a community cable television channel provide opportunities for students to gain experience and knowledge about the mass media and communications. WMOT, the University's National Public Radio affiliate, is a professionally managed public service radio station featuring jazz, news, and information programming. WMTS is a student-operated alternative FM radio station which carries an eclectic mix of music, news, and student information. The Campus Recreation Office, located in the Recreation Center, administers a comprehensive recreation program for MTSU students, including team or club sports, fitness activities, aquatic programs, and leisure clinics. The Recreation Center is a state-of-the-art facility housing 6 basketball/volleyball courts, 6 racquetball courts, an indoor track, aerobics room, free weights area, cardiovascular machines, indoor pool, locker rooms, a rock climbing wall, and a sun deck with adjacent sand volleyball courts.

Fourteen national fraternities are represented on the MTSU campus: Alpha Gamma Rho, Alpha Phi Alpha, Beta Theta Pi, Delta Tau Delta, Kappa Alpha Order, Kappa Alpha Psi, Kappa Sigma, Omega Psi Phi, Phi Beta Sigma, Pi Kappa Alpha, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Sigma Chi, Sigma Nu, Sigma Phi Epsilon, and Tau Kappa Epsilon. Ten nationally-chartered sororities are active at MTSU: Alpha Delta Pi, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Alpha Omicron Pi, Chi Omega, Delta Sigma Theta, Delta Zeta, Kappa Delta, Sigma Gamma Rho, Zeta Phi Beta, Zeta Tau Alpha.

Orientation for freshmen and transfer students is provided during the summer prior to matriculation. The programs allow new students to meet an academic advisor, participate in pre-selection of courses, and become familiar with campus activities and services.

The SGA provides an opportunity for students to participate in University governance by ensuring an exchange of ideas and opinions between the student body and the administration.

Over 175 student organizations are currently recognized by the Division of Student Affairs. Activities include community service, professional organizations, performing arts groups, and many others.

Student Programming administers Special Events functions which are run entirely by students through five special interest programming groups: Ideas and Issues, Fine Arts, Films, Dance, and Concerts.

Student Publications publishes the campus newspaper, Sidelines; the Midlander yearbook; and the magazine, Collage. These publications are staffed by students and provide experiences in writing, editing, design, photography, advertising and public relations. Students of all majors are encouraged to join the staffs.

Athletics http://www.goblueraiders.com MTSU participates in the Sunbelt Conference at the Division I-A level. We currently field men's teams in Baseball, Basketball, Football, Golf, Track, and Tennis. Women's teams include Softball, Basketball, Track, Volleyball, and Soccer.
