Transfer Admissions

On August 1, 1998, MTSU became the first university in the state to have an Honors College.

Admission Standards

Middle Tennessee State University grants admission to transfer applicants who have 24 or more semester hours and a cumulative college grade point average (GPA) of 2.00 or higher on all college work attempted. You must submit an official high school transcript and an official transcript from each college or university you have ever attended in order to be considered for admission. Through Summer 2008, applicants who have earned 8 or fewer semester hours or 12 or fewer quarter hours from a college or university must meet both transfer and freshman admission standards. Beginning Fall 2008, applicants who have earned 23 or fewer semester hours or 35 or fewer quarter hours from a college or university must meet both transfer and freshman admission standards.

Applicants who are denied admission because the cumulative GPA is lower than a 2.00 will be sent a Personal Statement Form which can be used to request consideration by the Admissions Review Board for admission to MTSU on a probationary basis. The decision of the Admissions Review Board in such cases is final.

If your cumulative GPA is less than 2.00 but you have not been enrolled in any post-secondary institution in the 12 months preceding the term for which you are applying, you will be offered admission to MTSU on a probationary basis.

Transfer applicants graduating from high school in 1989 or after who have not yet earned a bachelors degree are subject to the Tennessee Board of Regents' high school unit requirements. Eligible transfer applicants who are lacking one or more of these courses will be admitted, but are required to complete equivalent college courses to remove the deficiencies. This must be done within the first 30 hours of enrollment at MTSU.

Please see Application Instructions for more information about the application process or Transfer Credit Evaluation for details about how we evaluate transfer coursework.

Academic Assessment Placement Testing Requirements

As a member of the Tennessee Board of Regents (TBR) system, MTSU administers the Academic Assessment Placement Testing in accordance with the following TBR guidelines:
  1. If you have not earned credits in college-level, algebra-based mathematics or college-level English, you will be assessed based on valid ACT/SAT scores or other appropriate departmental assessment.
  2. If you graduated from high school in 1989 or after, and did not complete four years of English in high school, the Placement Writing assessment will be required unless you have already completed equivalent college course(s).
  3. If you graduated from high school in 1989 or after, and did not complete two years of high school algebra and one year of geometry, the Placement Math assessment will be required unless you have already completed equivalent college coursework.
The Placement Test assists in course placement and may result in requiring some students to enroll in developmental courses as additions to their degree programs.

If required to take the Placement Test for any of the reasons listed above, the Admissions Office (after reviewing and approving your application) will send you a card which is your ticket to take the test. The applicant is responsible for signing up for a Placement Test session prior to registration. For more information about the content of the test, please contact the MTSU Academic Enrichment Office, (615) 898-2568.

MTSU Policies on Transfer Credit

When students consider transferring from one college to another, they are concerned about their credit hours. Middle Tennessee State University's admission policies are designed to help you make a smooth transition.

The Transfer Evaluation Process

All coursework completed at previously attended colleges and universities will be evaluated and posted to your MTSU transcript as part of the admissions process. The evaluation will be done upon receipt of your complete transcript(s). The Admissions Office evaluates only official copies of transcripts after an application for admission has been received. Due to the large number of transfer students who apply for admission, we are not able to provide "on-the-spot" evaluations. However, you may view the most recent transfer equivalencies at TEAM: (Transfer Equivalencies at Middle).

If a transfer course does not have a specific MTSU equivalent, it will be posted on your academic record as an elective course. Your faculty advisor will be able to assist you with assigning these courses to your degree requirements and can, with the approval of the department chairman, recommend that an elective course be substituted for a specific required course. However, because of accreditation or departmental requirements, certain MTSU departments restrict the number of electives that can be applied towards their degree programs. Departments with special regulations are identified in the course section of the Undergraduate Catalog.

If you are transferring from a Tennessee Board of Regents community college, please consult the online listing of transfer course equivalencies for your school at the TEAM website.

The Admissions Office does not do a course-by-course evaluation of credit if you have already received a bachelor's degree. Your academic advisor will be able to assist you in determining the courses needed for your second bachelor's degree. The MTSU Undergraduate Catalog contains information about requirements for students who enroll to obtain a second bachelor's degree, please consult the " Degree Requirements" section of the catalog and meet with your faculty advisor.

Acceptance of Transfer Credit

Middle Tennessee State University accepts transfer credit from institutions of higher learning based upon the following considerations:

  1. the educational quality of the institution from which the student transfers;
  2. the comparability of the nature, content, and level of credit earned to that offered by MTSU; and
  3. the appropriateness and applicability of the credit earned to the programs offered by MTSU in light of the student's educational goals.

When posting transfer courses to the MTSU record, all transfer courses are converted to MTSU's grading scale and repeat policy. The Admissions Office will send an evaluation when the file is complete. The office does not evaluate credit for students who have already received a bachelor's degree.

Students who have completed coursework at institutions for which MTSU has no recent history may be asked to provide information to determine the comparability of content and level of credit presented as transfer to that credit offered by MTSU. Petition is made by submitting the Application for Acceptance of Credit Form available in the Admissions Office. Credit will be granted upon recommendation from the academic advisor and chair of the academic department in which the course is taught, approval of the academic dean of the college in which the course is taught, and approval by the Associate Director of Admissions for Transfer Services.

Students who feel that they are competent in certain subject areas are encouraged to earn credit through a nationally recognized credit-by-examination program or through departmental credit-by-examination programs at MTSU.

Of the hours required for graduation, a minimum of 60 semester hours of senior college credit (credit awarded at four-year institutions) is required of all students who transfer from accredited colleges of less than four-year designation, with at least 42 of the 60 being upper-division courses. A grade of D in ENGL 1010 and 1020 is used to determine admission eligibility but does not meet degree requirements.

NOTE: All universities and community colleges in the Tennessee Board of Regents (TBR) system share a common set of minimum requirements for baccalaureate degrees or associate degrees designed for transfer.

NOTE: MTSU honors the completion of DSP requirements from any TBR institution regardless of credit hours assigned to individual courses or interventions used to complete the DSP requirements. Successful completion of DSP requirements from non-TBR institutions is demonstrated through COMPASS testing.

Faculty Advising

We encourage you to obtain faculty advising with regard to your degree plan prior to your first term at MTSU and then each term thereafter. This will ensure that you don't take the wrong courses or take them in the wrong order. By the end of your sophomore year, you should work with your advisor to fill out an "Upper-Division Form" which details the courses you have completed and those yet to be completed for your major.

To obtain a faculty advisor, call the department where you intend to major. Faculty advising is also part of the summer orientation program (CUSTOMS). If you have not yet decided on a major, you will be advised by staff in the Academic Support Center, (615) 898-2339.

Tennessee Board of Regents (TBR) Common Catalog Statement Regarding General Education

Effective Fall Semester 2004, all institutions in the State University and Community College System of Tennessee (the Tennessee Board of Regents System) will share a common lower-division freshman and sophomore) general education core curriculum of forty-one (41) semester hours for baccalaureate degrees and he Associate of Arts and the Associate of Science degrees. The courses composing the general education curriculum are contained within the following subject categories:

Baccalaureate Degrees*

Subject Area and Credit Hours

Communication 9 hours**
Humanities and/or Fine Arts (including at least 3 hours in literature 9 hours
Social/Behavioral Sciences 6 hours
History 6 hours***
Natural Sciences 8 hours
Mathematics 3 hours
Total 41 hours

*Foreign language courses are an additional requirement for the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree. The B.A. degree requires proficiency in a foreign language equivalent to completion of two years of college-level work.

**Six hours of English composition and three hours in English oral presentational communication are required.

***Students who plan to transfer to Tennessee Board of Regents (TBR) universities should take six hours of American History (a maximum of three hours of Tennessee History may substitute). Students who plan to transfer to non-TBR institutions should check requirements and take the appropriate courses.

Although the courses designated by TBR institutions to fulfill the requirements of the general education subject categories vary, transfer of the courses is assured through the following means:

  • Upon completion of an A.A. or A.S. degree from a TBR institution, the requirements of the lower-division general education core will be complete and accepted by a TBR university in the transfer process
  • If an A.A. or A.S. is not obtained, transfer of general education courses will be based upon fulfillment of complete subject categories. (Example: If all eight hours in the category of Natural Sciences are complete, then this block of the general education core is complete.) When a subject category is incomplete, course-by-course evaluation will be conducted. The provision of block fulfillment pertains also to students who transfer among TBR universities.
  • Institutional/departmental requirements of the grade of C will be honored and enforced.
  • Certain majors require specific courses to be taken in general education. Check the departmental catalog section(s) for major requirements that must be fulfilled under lower-division general education.

Courses designated to fulfill general education requirements by Middle Tennessee State University are published in the Undergraduate Catalog. A complete listing of the courses fulfilling general education requirements for all TBR institutions is available on the Web site (www.tbr.state.tn.us) under Transfer and Articulation Information.

Departmental Requirements

Several MTSU departments have additional requirements which affect transfer students:
  • Mass Communication majors: MTSU will accept all academic work in mass communications completed at accredited institutions of higher learning. However, only 12 semester hours can be applied to a major in mass communication at MTSU and these must be the correct courses required for the degree in the student's selected sequence.
  • Art majors: All art majors must participate in a sophomore portfolio review.
  • Nursing majors: Any student formally admitted to the University may pursue the pre-nursing curriculum. Students must apply to the Nursing Department for admission to the last two years of the program.
If you are majoring in one of these departments, your faculty advisor will be able to assist you in handling these requirements.
