GRADUATE CERTIFICATION IN GERONTOLOGY The Graduate Certificate in
Gerontology provides advanced study in gerontology for students preparing for
careers in a broad range of positions. It also offers those working in the
aging field an opportunity to enrich existing knowledge and skills while
furthering opportunities for career advancement. Certification requires the
completion of a minimum of 15 hours of graduate courses. Students must complete either SOC 5020
Sociology of Aging, PSY 5610 Adult Psychology and Aging, or SOC 6550 Seminar on
Aging, plus 12 electives from the list below.
Students with little or no experience working with the elderly are
encouraged to complete SOC 6900 Practicum:

Admission and Retention Requirements Students interested in completing the Graduate Certificate should apply to the Graduate School using the online application. Applications also may be obtained in the Sam H. Ingram Building, Room 121A. Once a student is admitted to the Graduate School, his or her application is transmitted to the Gerontology Certificate Program advisor for admission consideration. Students must possess a bachelor’s degree with an undergraduate grade point average of 2.75 (4.0 scale) and are required to submit a letter demonstrating their interest, detailing prior experience, and outlining career goals and aspirations. Students may transfer up to six (6) credit hours of approved graduate coursework into the certificate program. Once admitted, students will complete a
Program
of Study form outlining the courses they plan to take to complete
the certificate. Students
must comply with existing policies
applicable to all graduate programs at MTSU. The time limit for
use of credit toward the certificate is six years from the date of
enrollment in the earliest course applied toward the certificate,
including transferred courses. Students must maintain a cumulative graduate grade point average of 3.00
in courses leading to the certificate. |
