TSW view PowerPoint on the “Tragic Hero,” which is linked to
teacher’s main website; the first few slides of this Presentation serve as the
“set,” by breaking down the words and the meaning of the characterization of
the “Tragic Hero” to get the students’ attention and to get them thinking about
what this type of character, which is a prominent aspect of Hamlet adds to a literary work,
especially a drama.

Instructional Procedures

1.)
TSW view PowerPoint Presentation on Hamlet and the tragic hero, which is
linked to teacher’s main website
2.)
TSW then complete exercise on handout
(also linked to teacher’s website) to help begin the brainstorming stage of the
writing process
3.)
TSW submit, via email, the completed
handout, for review by the teacher
4.)
TTW review each completed handout,
adding comments and/or suggestions as applicable
5.)
TSW submit, via email, an analysis of
at least 2 (double-spaced) pages that discusses the characterization of Hamlet
as a tragic hero by Shakespeare
6.)
TTW review each student’s analysis and
provide suggestions for revisions, if applicable
7.)
TSW submit, via email, his or her
revision for a grade
8.)
TTW return each graded analysis with
comments and/or suggestions for future writing assignments
9.)
TSW submit, via email, a list of at
least 10 new vocabulary words and their meanings
10.) TTW review vocabulary lists, adding any
relevant definitions, and return to students, via email
11.) TSW then use the new vocabulary words in
either a well-composed paragraph or, in an original piece of creative writing
(such as a poem, song lyrics, or short dialogue), to be posted as a collection
on teacher’s website
12.) TSW submit paragraph or creative writing
work, via email
13.) TTW review each submission, add comments or
suggestions, and allow students to revise (if necessary), and
resubmit before work is posted and given a
final grade

Materials Needed
For completion of this lesson, TSW require access to the
