DISCUSSION GROUPS OF INTEREST TO SOCIOLOGISTS

The following are Discussion Groups on the Internet that might be of interest to Sociologists. For each, I have provided the name of the group, a description of the group and the listserv address. In case someone is on bitnet, the bitnet addresses, where appropriate, are in parentheses.

In order to subscribe to any of these, you will need to send an e-mail message to the listserv address. Leave the subject line blank and go directly to the body of the message. Here it gets a bit complicated. Listservs vary with regard to the kinds of commands you will need to send in order to subscribe. The variations are presented below:

Most listservs require that you send the following:

SUB YOUR NAME

If this does not work (and if it doesn't you will receive an error message from the listserv), try this:

SUBSCRIBE YOUR NAME

Some of these guys are tricky. Some require that everything be un upper- case, some require lower-case. You will just have to experiment.

Once you have successfully subscribed, the listserv will send you a document explaining how to post messages, access archived materials, unsubscribe, set your mailing preferences, etc. It is very important that you keep this document, either on disk or h ard copy. I promise, you will need it.
