Start HyperTerminal: From the Start button, select
- Programs
- Accessories
- Communications (Windows98 only)
- HyperTerminal
- Double Click on HyperTerm.exe
This will start the HyperTerminal program for a New Connection.

In the New Connection dialogue box, enter a name for the Connection (e.g. MTSU5176), select an icon, and click on the OK button. This will be the title that will show up when the file is saved.

Next, the Phone Number dialogue box will appear. Enter the phone number you wish to connect to. Below is a list of MTSU access numbers. Ensure that the correct modem for your system is selected in the pull-down list for Connect Using:. If you do not see your modem listed in the pull-down list, see the Modem Setup / Configuration Prolems section below.

If everything checks out, click the OK button.

You should now see the Connect. Before clicking the Dial button you need to consider the following issues:
- Disabling Call Waiting: Click on the Dialing Properties... button. This brings up the Dialing Properties dialogue box. About two thirds the way down you should see a check box for This location has call waiting, to disable it, dial:. You need to know what prefix disables call waiting. For Example, Bellsouth uses *70 to disable call waiting. Choose the appropriate prefix from the pull-down menu and click the OK button.
- Now, click the Modify... button. This brings up the Properties dialogue box. On this window you should see a tab at the top for Settings. Click it, change the Emulation entry to VT100, and click the OK button.

You are now ready to connect to MTSU. Click on the Dial button to test the settings. This should cause the modem to dial the MTSU computing system and establish a remote connection. If the connection is not established, disconnect the modem by clicking the Cancel button. Click on File | Properties and adjust the needed settings. Then re-test the setting. (Listen for the Modem dialing out). Once connected, you will geta blank sceen; hit your enter key and a LOCAL> prompt should appear. At this prompt type in telnet frank then enteryou username and password at the following prompts.

Once a successful connection is established, click on the File from the toolbar menu and select Save. this will save the setting to a file in the HyperTerminal folder. Now, to establish a connectino in the future use the steps in Step 1 to open the Hyperterminal folder. Then double lick on the icon for the file you have just saved. This will take you to the Dial dialogue box.
