1. Pressure in the atmosphere varies inversely with altitude.
 
Figure 1. The average pressure of the atmosphere at sea level is approximately 1000 millibars (mb) or 14.7 lbs./in.2 Atmospheric pressure is due to the weight of the air above you. As you ascend, there is less air above you and hence lower pressure.
