About Us

History of the Office

In 2006, the President and Provost of Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) authorized the establishment of an Office of Institutional Diversity. Its purpose was to coordinate the institutionalization of diversity as a core value throughout the MTSU community. This included enhancing the quality of relationships that the MTSU community had with those of different cultures and assuming the primary mission of its predecessor, the Office of Cultural Diversity Initiative (CDI). CDI, and now OID, has as major goals to attract, retain, and graduate culturally diverse students of high academic pursuit and recruit and retain talented underrepresented faculty, staff, and administrators. This obligation dovetails with the MTSU Academic Master Plan which pledges a commitment "to delivering quality education in instruction, scholarship, and service in an environment that is inclusive, values diversity, expands opportunities for international education, and responds to the needs of a multicultural student population."

Our Vision and Goals

As we seek to enhance the quality of the experience for students, faculty, staff, and administrators we will concentrate on six major objectives:

  • Implement University Diversity Plan
  • Increase faculty and staff diversity
  • Sponsor Biennial International Conference on Cultural Diversity
  • Increase diverse student population of the MTSU Scholars Academy
  • Further support the mission of the Multicultural Caucus
  • Establish grants to provide resources for students, faculty, and staff
