Lesson #2: “Pizza Parlor Predicament”

Unit: Cell Structure and Function

Subject: Biology

Grade: 9th

State of Tennessee Standard Number: 1.0 Cells - The student will investigate the structures and functions of cell membranes, organelles, and component biomolecules as related to major cell processes.

Objectives

1.      TSW label the parts of an animal cell

2.    TSW match cell organelles with their respective functions

Set

The first PowerPoint slide will contain a picture of a pizza parlor and ask the question, “In what ways are a pizza parlor and a cell similar?” The structures and functions of a cell will be compared to those of a pizza parlor throughout the remainder of the presentation.

Instructional Procedures

1.      TTW use PowerPoint to identify the parts of a cell and their associated functions, and make a comparison between cell structures and functions and those within a pizza parlor.

2.    TTW provide guided practice, as indicated below.

3.    TTW check for understanding via assignments, as indicated below.

4.    TTW return graded assignments to the students via email, to be used by the students to study for the upcoming unit test.

Guided Practice

TSW complete the Eukaryotic Cell Interactive Animation activity found at http://www.cellsalive.com/cells/cell_model.htm.

Checks for Understanding

The following assignments will be completed by the student and evaluated by the teacher:

1.      TSW label the numbered parts of the cell diagram on the handout posted on the class website. The answers will be listed in a Microsoft Word document and emailed to the teacher.

2.    TSW compare a cell to their school and use that analogy to describe the parts of a cell and their functions. This assignment will be completed using Microsoft Word and emailed to the teacher.
