Objective:

To teach students to observe and identify environmental features of a place; basic and specific elements of buildings; analyze and conclude their significance.

Procedure:

Give each student a copy of a visual survey form.  Using sketches, slides, or photographs, instruct students to circle the features of the form that resemble the ones they see at a place or on a building.  On the back of the form, students may sketch any details not included or write questions they have about the place or building.

Use visual survey forms on a walking tour of the neighborhood or on any field trip. Compare the features of different buildings. Discuss the features and try to identify styles.
