Harry Potter. It's simply amazing how well known he is, how many people have heard of him even if they haven't seen the movies or read the books. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone was written by J.K. Rowling in 1990. She tells the story of riding on a train to London and developing the idea for the first book. She spent four hours imagining the life of this young boy before finally getting home to a pen so she could start to write it down.

The manuscript was accepted for publication in August 1996. Pottermania quickly overtook the world as children everywhere discovered the wondrous world of an eleven year old boy who didn't know he was a wizard.  Now, in 2005, Potter fans are anxiously awaiting the 6th book Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, scheduled for release on July 16th, as well as the November release of the film version of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

You can find detailed definitions, explanations, descriptions and more at the Harry Potter Lexicon. A thorough menu is here.
