Grades

GRADES:

Each print is graded out of a possible 25 points, including its concept, drawing/design skills, printing skills, whether sketches for the print were done on time, whether the print was competed for the critique, and whether it was turned in for grading on time.

Prints must be collated (signed & numbered) in order to be graded, and the edition must be turned in in a portfolio. Prints which have not been collated or which are loose or in a paper package will not be accepted for grading.

The final grade is an average of the grade for individual prints, along with individual grades for the semester for creativity, participation in critiques, good studio habits (cleaning up after yourself, having the materials you need), and the presentation of your final portfolio, which includes matting, and attendance.

This total is then calculated into an average.

A = 90% - 100%
B + = 87% - 89%
B = 84 %-86%
B - = 80%-83%
C + = 77% - 79%
C = 74% - 76%
C - = 70% - 73%
D + = 67% - 69%
D = 63% - 65%
D - = 60% - 63%
F = 59 and below

Explanation of grades:

A – Outstanding work. This is free of technical errors, such as registration, and shows excellent use of drawing and design skills, including color use, and sensitivity to the surface on which it is printed. In addition, the work shows an understanding of content as opposed simply to subject matter. It avoids visual clichés. The prints are all consistent within the edition. This work goes above and beyond satisfying the requirements of the assignment.

B – Good work. Generally it shows most of the qualities of "A" work, but there is some aspect of those qualities that shows less proficiency or understanding. It may be that the image is very well printed, but more mundane, or that the image is extremely creative but that there are a few minor flaws in printing.

C – Average work. Generally this work is acceptable, showing a basic understanding of the techniques used, but showing some difficulty in controlling the medium. There may be problems with drawing, design, and composition, including color use. The image may seem second-hand, and show a lack of involvement in both idea and execution.

D – Below average work. The work may appear unfinished, or show serious problems with drawing, design, and printing, including color use. It does not show appropriate mastery of the materials or understanding of the level of competency required for the assignment.

F – Failing work. The work is not turned in, or is performed at an unacceptable level in terms of both design and execution.

Do you have a lottery scholarship?

To retain Tennessee Education Lottery Scholarship eligibility, you must earn a cumulative TELS GPA of 2.75 after 24 and 48 attempted hours and a cumulative TELS GPA of 3.0 thereafter. You may qualify with a 2.75 cumulative GPA after 72 attempted hours (and subsequent semesters), if you are enrolled full-time and maintain a semester GPA of at least 3.0. A grade of C, D, F, or I in this class may negatively impact TELS eligibility.

Dropping a class after 14 days may also impact eligibility; if you withdraw from this class and it results in an enrollment status of less than full time, you may lose eligibility for your lottery scholarship. Lottery recipients are eligible to receive the scholarship for a maximum of five years from the date of initial enrollment, or until a bachelor degree is earned; students who first received the lottery scholarship in Fall 2009 or later will additionally be limited to 120 TELS attempted hours.

For additional Lottery rules, please refer to your Lottery Statement of Understanding form via RaiderNet, review lottery requirements on the web at www.mtsu.edu/scholarships/telsconteligibility_scholarships.shtml, or contact the Financial Aid Office at 898-2830.
