Introduction to Philosophy

PHI 1030: Introduction to Philosophy

Rationale & Objective: This course will familiarize the student with the nature and kind of issues with which philosophers have been concerned throughout the ages. The objective is to stimulate the student to think critically about those and similar issues. At the end of the course the student will be able to engage in an examination of some of the beliefs to which she subscribes.

Course Content: The following are among the questions we will investigate: Does God exist? If so, how can we explain the existence of evil in the world? Can we ever be certain of anything? What is mind or soul? How is it related to the body? Do computers think? What is thinking anyway? Is it true that humans cannot be morally and legally responsible for their actions unless those actions are performed freely? What then is freedom? What is piety or holiness?
The selections we will study are all attempts to answer these and similar questions.

Methodology: Lectures, a mandatory class presentation by each student, and class discussions.
