High School 101: 21st Century Skills and High School Transition

High School 101, used in 750 schools nationwide, is an innovative project-based strategy focused on engagement and relevance. This high energy session will address the ten High School 101 units that provide students with vital 21st Century skills – financial literacy, time management, people skills, tolerance, business literacy, test-taking/study skills, choices/consequences, technology literacy, learning styles, and communication skills. Session attendees will get a sneak peak at each of the ten micro-units that make up this nationally-acclaimed course and will be introduced to a researched-based approach for delivering 21st Century skills that will help students succeed in the classroom as well as the workplace. Designed to be implemented as 10 independent project-based units, High School 101 is aligned to the findings of the Partnership for 21st Century Skills. The presenter is Chad Foster, best-selling author of Teenagers Preparing for the Real World and Financial Literacy for Teens, and co-author of High School 101. Chad’s Books have been read by more than one million students and his project-based curricula are used in 4,500 classrooms nationwide.

International Cuisine: Asian

The Art Institute of Tennessee-Nashville

This session will focus on a very popular international cuisine: Asian. Through hands-on activity, product exploration, and recipes, participants will learn about the many facets of this cuisine. Of course, no international cuisine exploration would be complete without a proper tasting! Required dress for this session includes closed toe shoes, a chef coat and black pants. Participants should bring Chef/French Knive and a Paring knife. This is a joint session with Trade and Industry Culinary Arts. This session is full.

High School Personal Finance: Preparing Tennessee

This two-day workshop will provide teachers with tools for teaching the new personal finance course. The session will allow educators to expand their knowledge of personal finance concepts and provide them with curriculum and supplemental teaching tools for use in the classroom. All concepts covered during the workshop will focus on the four key areas of the personal finance course standards: income, money management, spending and credit, and saving and investing. This training is not required for Economics, Business Technology, Marketing Education, and Family and Consumer Sciences. This session is required for all other endorsements including Academic teachers. Pre-registration is required. No fee is required. Plan to attend this session in its entirety.

Automotive Technology Institute

The Automotive Technology Institute is a three day program that will apply to NATEF requirements for technical training. This institute will serve as professional development for any Automotive/Collision/Diesel/Leisure Craft Trade and Industrial teacher and is open to secondary and post secondary automotive instructors. The sessions will include best practices in instruction, SkillsUSA training, program certifications, ASE preparation, OE service, new equipment and training.

Industry Certification for Visual Communications and Digital Design and Imaging

This is a two-day training with an exam to test the new industry certification being planned for Visual Communication and Digital Design and Imaging. Industry partners and ADDA have joined to create an this industry certification program for Tennessee. This certification will be required for the 2010-2011 school year. If you are not currently certified to teach the Digital Imaging course, this is an important session for Visual Communication instructors and Graphic Communication instructors. Pre- Registration is required. Plan to attend this session in its entirety.

CIW Certification Training and Testing CIW Foundations-Five Day Session
(5 day session)

Faculty Institute Class includes the following: +35 hours of Instructor-led training; training delivered by an experienced academic CIW Certified Instructor, Stephen Schneiter; training delivered using Official CIW Instructor Guides that faculty can keep and use in the classroom for their own classes; Individual Assess PREP assessment tool that can evaluate knowledge pre, during, and post class and assist with test preparation; preparation for faculty to take CIW Associate Foundation Certification test; CIW exam voucher; preparation for faculty to teach using Official CIW curriculum; ability to share best practices with other faculty in the class. High School Criminal Justice Instructors' In-Service

Tennessee Law Enforcement Training Academy

The high school criminal justice instructors' in-service school at TLETA will provide an industry certification to Tennessee criminal justice teachers. This program has the approval of the Tennessee Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission (POST). Attendees that come from law enforcement backgrounds will be provided updates on key areas of the law enforcement profession so as to stay current in their knowledge of the criminal justice system. Future offerings will be provided in cooperation with the Tennessee Department of Education in order to maintain this industry certification. Topics will include updates and developments in the law, patrol subjects, crime scene investigation, current trends in dangerous drugs, the use of force, gangs and the ethical and professional standards of law enforcement. This seminar will be held in the total immersion environment of the academy's campus in Nashville. Housing and meals are included in the tuition, but students may choose to commute to class or find alternative lodging. This industry certification will be required of all criminal justice instructors by August 2011.

American Design and Drafting Association (ADDA)
Update and Testing

July 21-22, 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Blackman High School

This two-day seminar will provide instructors with a preview and update for taking the ADDA certification exam. The review and exam is designated to assist instructors in obtaining their goal of becoming ADDA certified. The exam will be administered on the second day after review. As instructors pre-register, they will get a free study guide ahead of time that will assist in the test and the class. The test will be given in either discipline of Technical or Architectural Drafting. Either will satisfy the required industry certification. Pre-registration required. National Center for Construction Education Research (NCCER) Industry Certification
July 23-24, 9:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
Blackman High School

This two-day certification seminar is based on national standards within the construction trades. Participants will engage in an in-depth training with certification on the NCCER Core curriculum. The certification will enable individuals with construction and drafting endorsement codes to teach the core curriculum of the NCCER and will suffice for industry certification for construction trade teachers. Pre-registration is required. Plan to attend this session in its entirety. No fee is required.

OSHA 10 Hour Safety Course
July 23-24, 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.
Blackman High School

The OSHA 10 hour safety course is a must for every Career and Technology Education instructor. This course, which normally costs $150.00, is being offered at $50.00 per teacher. In addition to the training, several pamphlets and other safety data will be provided to each person. Each Teacher will receive a certificate of completion and a wallet card from OSHA showing that they have completed this safety program. This card never expires. The course includes : Introduction to OSHA, Walking and Working Surfaces, Exit Routes, Emergency Action Plans, Fire Prevention Plans and Fire Protection. Also included are Electrical, Machine Guarding, Safety and Health Programs, Tools - both Hand and Power, Personal Protective Equipment, Stairways and Ladders, and Fall Protection. An OSHA card for either General Industry or Construction will be provided. There will also be a CD with information about school safety that will be shared with the teachers. National Institute for Metalworking Skills
Professional Development Workshop

Industry skill certifications for machining and metal forming is now available. The National Institute for Metalworking Skills, the nation’s only ANSI accredited developer of skill standards for the metalworking industry, gives instructors and students the opportunity to certify their skills through NIMS credentialing. In addition, NIMS accreditation promotes quality through recognition of training programs which meet or exceed stringent NIMS requirements by benchmarking the program to the national standards. This workshop will review NIMS products and procedures, and participants will begin NIMS certification. This certification will be required for all manufacturing endorsements except Principles of Engineering and PLTW courses. This NIMS certification will be required by August 2010.

Google Resources in the Business Technology Program

A pre-conference session on procedures for accessing and using Google resources for classroom instruction will be presented and discussed. The presentation will center on instructional materials that are provided to educational institutions at no charge to support the business technology instructional program. Industry Certification in Web Design
July 20, 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

A pre-conference Adobe Industry certification session for business technology instructors will be provided. Teachers will be given an opportunity to verify industry certification in web site design based on nationally certified standardized testing while using Adobe DreamWeaver, Flash, and/or Photoshop as the vehicle for assessment of knowledge and skills. Attendees must pre-register for this event. Teachers will receive study materials prior to the pre-conference assessment session, They will complete the assessment during this program. Pre-registration is required. Testing is free to the first 50 teachers who sign-up. Do you know the “code behind the code” when designing web pages? When you open a web page and view the source code, you will find that the “code behind the code” is HTML. HTML (HyperText Markup Language) is a text document that browsers use to display text and graphics. Many individuals still use HTML writing code in a text editor like Windows NotePad. Even if you use Web Page Design software, such as Dreamweaver, FrontPage, or Web Expression, learning HTML basics can help you understand coding, troubleshoot problems, and tweak Web pages to suit your preferences.

Pre-Conference and Pre-Registration Sessions for CTE Directors and Administrators

TASL: Knowledge and Skills Attainment Rubric
July 20, 8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.

This presentation will outline CTE rubric plans and results of the first rubric pilot across the state in all seven CTE program areas. Participants will participate in an activity to apply the rubric to existing CTE competency profiles for CTE courses. This application activity will assist them in returning to their LEAs and supporting teachers who will ultimately enter the CTE competency profile results. Training will include best practices, including a protocol for looking at student work that was developed by the Annenburg Institute and Webb's Depth of Knowledge (DOK). Emphasis will be placed on the train the trainer approach the CTE Division will use in the second pilot to roll out the CTE rubric. This is a required session for all CTE directors. The training session will provide 6 hours of TASL credit. The entire training must be attended to receive full credit. Partial credit will not be an option.

Beef Quality Assurance Program Certification

The Tennessee Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) Program is focused on producing safe and wholesome beef products to consumers. Some areas to be discussed include injection sites, needle size, proper handling of vaccines, handling equipment, safety, bruise prevention, cow culling and record keeping. Individuals completing this training will be certified as BQA trainers. A CD containing the presentation and the BQA manual will be available to each individual attending. The BQA is one of the few industry certifications available for agriculture teachers.

Pesticide Certification Training

All teachers with a Greenhouse, Turf Lab, or any other lab that requires the use of chemicals must have a current Commerical Pesticide certification with a C10 and C15 endorsements. The training will help teachers who have not earned the minimum number of pesticide points or who need to take the test. Teachers may attend this session for additional pesticide points. All teachers must earn 18 points within the 3 year certification period. All points cannot be earned in one year or at any one meeting. All agricultural education courses with assigned pesticide points are submitted by the Department of Education to the Department of Agriculture.

This session will administer the core, C10 and C15 test that are required for agriculture teachers to teach and use pesticides within the agricultural curriculum and labs. This serves as an industry certification.

National Safe Tractor and Machinery Program

The Federal HOOA (Hazardous Occupations Order in Agriculture) law, promulgated in 1968, states that any farm employee between 14-15 years old must provide certification of tractor safety training before being employed. A new generation of training materials (Task Sheets) have been developed by the Pennsylvania State University. Training programs encompass 24 hours of intensive instruction. Appropriate Task Sheets will be covered by the Community Local Instructors along with skills and safe driving instruction. Upon the completion of the training, each student will be required to take a 50 question knowledge test with a minimum passing score of 70%. Students who successfully pass the knowledge test will be permitted to take the Skills and Driving tests. If these are successfully completed, the students will receive their formal certification from the U.S. Department of Labor. The purpose of this session is to familiarize instructors with the new curriculum and begin the Community Instructor certification process.

All teachers with an Agriscience endorsement, including all first and second year teachers, must attend this annual training to maintain their Agriscience Certification. (In addition to these two sessions, Agriscience Teachers please look for the starred (*) sessions during the conference. All first and second year teachers must attend this session. It will focus on classroom management, time management, and new teacher resources. New teachers, don't forget to also attend the New Teacher Training for all Agricultural Education and Family and Consumer Science Teachers on July 20, 8:30 a.m.-Noon.
