WELCOME
FROM THE DIRECTOR
Hi!
My name is Gina Poff, and I am the Director of New Student &
Family Programs at MTSU. My office is responsible for MTSU’s
new student orientation program—which we call CUSTOMS. This
site is the first step of your CUSTOMS journey, and it is designed
to help make your total CUSTOMS experience go more smoothly.
As
you may know, the CUSTOMS orientation process has several steps.
First you must register to participate in an on-campus CUSTOMS session
appropriate for your choice of major and your student status. Special
dates are designated especially for students majoring in each of
the five academic colleges. CUSTOMS is designed specificially to
meet the needs of first-year students.
Once
you have registered for your on-campus CUSTOMS session, your next
task is to carefully review and complete this Pre-CUSTOMS electronic
workbook. This program MUST be completed prior to your arrival on
campus for your two-day CUSTOMS session. It is designed to introduce
you to some of the information that will be important to you as
a student—and to answer some of your most basic questions
before you arrive on campus. We hope this will take some of the
mystery out of your transition to MTSU, and will give you an idea
of what to anticipate when you come to campus for your CUSTOMS program.
What
is Pre-CUSTOMS?
We will be covering a lot of information at CUSTOMS. During
CUSTOMS, you will be learning about being a student at MTSU, how
to navigate the university, the General Education curriculum, information
about your major, how to plan a schedule and how to register for
classes.
Pre-CUSTOMS
is designed to make all the information we give you at CUSTOMS a
little less overwhelming. You will be prepared for CUSTOMS after
you complete the Pre-CUSTOMS program. You will be presented information
about essential student services, student resources, academic information,
technology, student involvement and personal needs and special interests.
It
is very important that you follow this Pre-CUSTOMS program step
by step. At the end of the program, you will be asked to print a
small workbook. This workbook is a requirement for CUSTOMS,
so please remember to print it when you have finished and bring
it with you. You will be asked to show the workbook when you check
in for CUSTOMS. If you have any questions, write them down in the
workbook, so you’ll remember them when you get to campus.
During the on-campus CUSTOMS sessions there will be an opportunity
for you to meet with various university departments and staff and
to get all of your remaining questions answered.
Pre-CUSTOMS
requires you to complete all pages of the program before linking
to individual websites for further information. A list of all helpful
links will be provided at the end of the program. Once you have
completed the program and printed out your workbook, please use
the links to explore and learn more about all that MTSU has to offer.
REMEMBER!
The
required workbook, which you will print at the conclusion of the
Pre-CUSTOMS program will contain essential information,
references, and a CUSTOMS checklist. Please remember to
bring the workbook to CUSTOMS registration. You will refer
to it throughout your CUSTOMS session.
We
look forward to meeting you during your CUSTOMS visit. If you have
any questions, please contact the CUSTOMS office at (615) 898-5533.
