GEAR
UP
(Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs)
Middle
Tennessee State University has been active in GEAR UP through a
partnership with Vanderbilt University which was funded by a grant
from the U.S. Department of Education, Teacher and Student Development
Programs Service Office. Also active in this effort to encourage
and prepare these students to attend higher education, are their
parents, teachers and guidance counselors.
Over
200 high school students from Pearl Cohn High School in Nashville
have participated in the MTSU GEAR UP Summer Institutes. The MTSU
Summer Institute offered college-level classes in English, Mathematics
and University 1010, a course designed to introduce students to
college life. MTSU students in Human Development III (CDFS 4310)
Adolescent Development class served as mentors to the GEAR UP students.
And during the Summer Institute, undergraduate and graduate students
worked closely with the GEAR UP cohort as teaching assistants and
informal mentors.
