The Center for Historic Preservation (CHP) at Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) is one of sixteen Centers of Excellence based at Tennessee Board of Regents schools. Created in 1984, the CHP is a research and public service institution committed to the preservation, protection, enhancement, and promotion of our historic environment. The Center for Historic Preservation has provided services in every county of Tennessee and reaches across state, regional, and international boundaries for innovative ideas and partnerships. Now in its second decade of service, the Center provides leadership in public policy formation and preservation-related concerns.
The goals of the Center for Historic Preservation are:
- To stimulate and support economic development in Tennessee through applied research programs and activities which focus on identification, protection, promotion, and interpretation of heritage resources.
- To encourage In all citizens and residents of the state a sense of pride, place, and belonging.
- To enhance and promote the image of Tennessee higher education through an intense program of professional accomplishment and leadership at the local, state, regional, national, and international levels.
- To provide training, materials, and assistance for teachers and school systems in grades K-12, in higher education, and for the out-of-school adult public on heritage-related topics.
- To support the university's academic programs which relate to historic preservation including history, historic preservation/public history, education, geography, and human sciences.
