Horse Science Majors interested in Pre-Veterinary Medicine
Students interested in Horse Science can fulfill the requirements for admission into veterinary school while working on a Horse Science major at MTSU. In doing so, their minor area of study while at MTSU will likely be Science, or Biology or Chemistry, due to the heavy requirement of science courses for pre-veterinary medicine.

Courses Required - GPA - Other Admission Factors - Cost - Additional Options - US Veterinary Schools

Most students who are from Tennessee and interested in a career in veterinary medicine attend the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine (UTCVM) in Knoxville. Students from MTSU are evaluated on equal basis for acceptance to UTCVM as students from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville, or any other college. Several of our Horse Science graduates have been selected for admission into UTCVM as well as other veterinary schools.

The majority of the information below is about the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine in Knoxville. Information about other veterinary colleges may be found at this link.

College Courses Required for Admission
Prerequisites for Admission to UTCVM (based on semester hours) are listed in the following table. All pre-veterinary course requirements must be completed by the end of the spring term of the year in which the student intends to graduate. All prerequisite courses must be completed with a grade of C or better. Completion of course requirements alone does not guarantee acceptance into veterinary school.

Students are strongly encouraged to take additional biological science courses, especially comparative anatomy, mammalian physiology, and microbiology with laboratory.

Grade Point Average
Grades REALLY matter!! Qualifications for admission to veterinary college is heavily dependent upon grades. Grades account for 70% of the requirements for acceptance and other considerations account for 30%. Selection of applicants is first based on evaluation of academic transcripts and the Graduate Record Exam (GRE). Points are assigned according to various objective aspects of the transcripts. Students are ranked from highest to lowest scores and then a number of students will be selected for personal interviews. Final selection will be made form the interviewed applicants.

To give you an idea of the academic requirements for acceptance to the UTCVM, below are data reflecting the grade point averages of accepted students for the years 2004-2008:

Cost
UTCVM COSTS BASED ON 2008-09 SCHOOL YEAR
Tuition and fees per academic year:
Tennessee residents...........$15,348
Non-residents....................$40,724

Tennessee students may apply to schools in other states. The cost for out-of-state tuition is significantly higher than in state tuition. For example, the 2008-09 out-of-state tuition at Auburn University is $39,226, and at Colorado State University, $46,958. Furthermore, veterinary colleges designate the majority of their positions available to qualified applicants who are residents of the college's state. The University of Tennessee accepts 85 applicants each year, 60 Tennessee residents and 25 highly qualified non-Tennessee-residents.

Additional Options
Because of the limited number of spaces in U.S. veterinary colleges, each year many qualified students are not accepted. A good option for many students is Ross University on the Island of St. Kitts in the Caribbean. Another option is St. George's University on the island of Grenada.  The cost for Ross and St. George's is similar to other out-of-state tuitions.
