Our Horse Barn Manager, Jessica Schultz, brings much experience and a broad range of qualifications to the program. As an undergraduate, she arrived with a willingness to work and a competitive desire to excel. She began to mold her talent into solid skills and progressed through the Horse Science course work, making stellar grades as well as becoming a successful competitor for both the Equestrian Team and the Judging Team. She was a two-time Vice President of the Equestrian Team.

During her 2000-2001 Senior year, her Judging Team won the American Quarter Horse Congress, and the Equestrian Team Western squad won the Region, the Zone and was 6th at Nationals.  Jess herself won the Region, was Reserve Champion at Zones, and was 3rd at Nationals in the Advanced Western, and she qualified for Zones in Novice Fences. Her ability to adapt to many breeds, disciplines and competition allowed Jess to go right to horse training work upon graduation.

That first summer, well-known Florida trainer Clay Farrell was visiting in Murfreesboro, and the farm he works for was showing in Tennessee. He saw Jess at work and liked her attitude and ability, and he hired her for an opening at Prince Farm in Palmetto FL. Jess moved to the Sunshine State and began a new series of challenges and development at the top Quarter Horse show farm specializing in All-Around and Halter horses. Anne Prince, owner and manager of the farm  also took Jess under her wing, so besides riding and some teaching, Jess was able to develop her horse care and management skills at a higher level.  She remained at Prince Farm for three years.

After the Florida hurricane season of September 2004 was over, Jess came home to our new facility and jumped right back into the program with both feet. In her first year back, she supported the new research programs, the Equestrian and Judging Teams, classes, Public Service programs, Judging Contests, 4-H clinics and managed to become Regional Reserve Champion Alumni Western Rail and Reining and Zone Champion in the Rail.  She also showed our home bred, raised and trained Summer Jewel, affectionately known as “Lady,” to the Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders and Exhibitors Association World Versatility Championship in Reining.

In 2006, MTSU Alumna Cori Gould won the Alumni Rail class at the IHSA National Championship show in Harrisburg, PH, and Jessica Schultz was Reserve Champion. In 2007, Jess had another shot at both the IHSA National Championship Alumni Rail class and the Alumni Reining because of her double win at the Western Semi-Finals, and she did us proud by being named National Champion in BOTH! So, she collected an array of silver and two AQHA saddles, one of which remains on display in the Horse Science Center office.

We are extremely proud of Jessica and feel fortunate to have a talented and dedicated Horse Barn Manager. Contact Jessica if you are interested in student employment in the horse barn.
