What are the characteristics of a good mission statement?
A:
A mission statement identifies the purpose of your program.
It identifies what your program aspires to be and describes
the role that your unit plays within the larger unit (university).
Usually the mission statement should be concise enough for
faculty, staff and students to remember it without difficulty.

How can we make sure the mission remains a focus of faculty
and administrators?
A:
(1) Place the program mission statement in a departmental
handbook that is given to each faculty member. (2) Place the
mission statement on all course outlines. (3) Include the
mission statement on course syllabi.

How can we make sure the mission is shared with new faculty?
A.
(1) Share the mission statement with adjunct faculty during
an annual orientation meeting/workshop. (2) If a mentor is
assigned to new faculty members/adjuncts, that individual
may have the responsibility of presenting and discussing the
mission statement.

How can we make sure the mission is communicated to students?
A:
(1) Include the mission statement on all course syllabi. (2)
Introduce and discuss the mission of the program in a core
introductory course. (3) Provide learning activities where
students have opportunities to see the mission in action.
