Surveys

The Office of Institutional Effectiveness, Planning and Research conducts the following surveys:

Survey Schedule

National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE)
The National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) is a replacement of the Enrolled Student Survey. This survey will be administered twice during the 2005-10 Performance Funding cycle.

NSSE results help faculty and administrators discover and implement effective mechanisms for linking information about student experiences to improve academic programs and support services.

Graduating Senior Survey
Since 1997, Middle Tennessee State University has administered a survey annually to spring semester graduating seniors. Beginning fall 2009, the Graduating Senior survey is administered to the fall and spring graduating seniors. The purpose of the survey is to obtain information regarding the students’ educational experiences and future plans. The survey instrument is divided into five sections: (1) background information, (2) employment data, (3) plans following graduation, (4) student support services, and (5) satisfaction with general studies and their academic program. Departments can add additional questions to the survey.

Alumni Survey
The Alumni Survey, sent to MTSU alumni two years after graduation, asks our former students to evaluate their educational experiences at MTSU. All public universities utilize the same survey that is provided by the Tennessee Higher Education Commission. The most recent administration of the alumni survey was spring 2005.

The survey is conducted in the second and fifth years of the Performance Funding cycle.

Faculty Survey
In 1998 and 2001, Middle Tennessee State University participated in a national Faculty Survey sponsored by the UCLA Higher Education Research Institute. The survey is conducted triennially. The purpose of the survey was to obtain information about faculty workload, teaching practices, and job satisfaction. Information obtained from the survey was used in campus planning, policy analysis, and faculty development programs. The results of the Faculty Survey were shared with the Executive Vice President and Provost, deans and department chairs.

During spring 2004, Middle Tennessee State University participated in the Penn State Faculty Survey as part of the Foundations of Excellence in the First College Year project. The survey questions related to (1) instructional and related practices, (2) faculty involvement with first-year students, (3) faculty perceptions colleagues' and institutional priorities as they relate to the first year, and (4) demographic and other faculty information.

Employer Survey
Middle Tennessee State University is committed to identifying ways to better prepare graduates for future employment. An Employer Survey conducted for the first time during spring 2003, focused on determining employer satisfaction with the performance and knowledge of MTSU graduates. The survey is now a component of the Performance Funding program.

Major Field Test Survey

Graduating seniors who took a Major Field Test in spring 2004 were asked to complete a short survey following the test.

The purpose of the survey was to determine (1) whether the exams covered information included in the students' classes and (2) whether the student took the exam seriously.

MTSU library services continued to receive high marks from seniors.
