Abstract

As more universities adopt on-line learning, they are faced with the task of successfully implementing these programs. Previous research has identified eight factors that facilitate implementation of innovations and technology. We will present results form an ongoing study assessing the perception of the importance of each of these factors in implementing educational innovations. Special attention will be given to the perception of university faulty members.

Description

Previous research (Ely, 1990, 1999) identified 8 factors that facilitate the implementation of innovation. These are: 1) dissatisfaction with status quo, 2) skills and knowledge are present , 3) adequate resources available, 4) rewards and incentives provided, 5) time provided for workers to learn, 6) participation and shared decision making, 7) commitment from upper management, and 8) leadership from lower management. The influence of these factors transcends culture, innovation, and environment. Ely, (1999) recommends the check list assessment of these factors prior to implementation. Ensminger (2001) presents a more active position of assessing and addressing these factors during the development of an innovation in order to increase the success of implementation. This proactive stance requires understanding of end users perceptions of each of these eight factors in relation to the current innovation and the existing environment.

As universities adopt on-line learning strategies, pressures increase for these new programs to be implemented successfully. This study uses an online questionnaire to assess the perception of the importance of each of the above factors in implementing innovations in educational institutions. This session will specifically address the perceptions of faculty and staff employed at 2 and 4-year universities as they relate to implementing a new on-line degree program. We will also present strategies for implementing an innovation that addresses these eight factors in a proactive manner.

In the session, we will describe the methodology used in the study, and provide an overview of the current results. During the session, emphasis will be placed on relating the current study to existing research and literature in the area.
