Performance-Based Assessment in Teacher Preparation Using A Web-Based System
AbstractThis presentation will describe how one university has developed a unit assessment system that details how the education unit ensures that its programs prepare students with the knowledge, skills and dispositions necessary to be effective educators. The assessment system will be described and the kinds of data collected and how it is entered and managed through a web-based system. DescriptionThe State Department of Education has passed a policy requiring all higher education institutions with teacher preparation programs to develop a unit assessment system. This policy is also aligned with national accreditation standards for teacher preparation. The unit assessment system details how the education unit ensures that its programs prepare students with the knowledge, skills and dispositions necessary to be effective educators. In other words, what evidence does the unit have to demonstrate is effectiveness and how does it use this evidence to continually improve its program? A subset of the unit assessment system is the assessment system for individual candidates. How does the unit ensure that each individual student has attained the necessary knowledge, skills and dispositions? The unit assessment plan for all education programs at our institution delineates the means by which candidate performance is regularly assessed. The performance based assessment measures for each interval are contingent upon program and/or major. This presentation will describe the process and procedures for establishing a web-based assessment system for the education unit. The SQL Server Analysis Services for creating cubes and dimensions for analyzing data was used in developing the assessment system. This service can be used to discover patterns or trends on students, faculty, program enrollments, etc. We are still in the early process of creating the assessment system and will be able to describe how the information is being gathered, entered, analyzed and disseminated.
