QuickTime Virtual Reality for Web Delivery

By: Charles Hodges
Track 2 - Technology Tools for Use in the Classroom
Interest: General :: Workshop :: Level: Beginner

Abstract

Virtual reality (VR) can create a unique and interesting environment in which students at a distance can explore and investigate objects or scenes via the World Wide Web. Creating these VR components is a process that is much more simple than many believe. In this workshop participants will use a leading software package to create VR panoramas from an existing library of digital photos. The process and equipment necessary for capturing the digital photos will also be demonstrated. The process necessary to create VR objects will also be outlined.

Description

At the conclusion of this workshop each participant will have created a virtual reality (VR) component and created a simple web page to deliver the VR on the World Wide Web. The workshop will begin with a demonstration of how VR can be used in an instructional setting. The equipment necessary to create the VR components demonstrated will be on display and used to demonstrate the process necessary to capture the digital photos required to generate the VR content. Variations on the types of equipment that can be used will be discussed. At this point the participants will be lead through the steps necessary to generate a VR object from existing digital photos. After each participant has successfully created a VR component, the HTML necessary to embed the VR into a web page will be presented via a template HTML file. The process necessary to create VR objects will be outlined. If time permits, participants will be given the opportunity to experiment with the digital camera and other equipment.
