When Good Intentions Are Not Enough: Motivating Faculty "Ownership" of IT Initiatives

Abstract

This presentation is a case study examining patterns of instructional technology adoption at Southwest Missouri State University. It will identify, from the viewpoint of an "early adopter," some of the major obstacles to instruction technology adoption and advance possible solutions.

Description

Like secondary institutions everywhere, Southwest Missouri State University has devoted considerable time, effort, and money to the adoption of instructional technology. But the results at SMSU have been mixed. For every notable success, it seems, there has been a notable failure. Despite the good intentions and hard work of SMSU administrators, faculty, and IT specialists, instructional technology has only been partially assimilated at SMSU. Nor will instructional technology ever be fully assimilated until the main users of instructional technology - the faculty - can feel a sense of ownership. How can this be done? This presentation will offer some possible measures toward this end, and plead for others.
