Technology Tools for Teaching Mathematics

Abstract

This workshop will focus on useful tools for the process of putting mathematics, equations, and graphics on the web. The emphasis will be on effective, quick techniques which can be used in a variety of circumstances (print, PowerPoint, web, etc.) Participants will be provided with information about PowerPoint, Scientific Notebook, Graphlink for the TI-83 and Snag-it. Some brief information and examples will be given using Dreamweaver, Frontpage, and Macromedia Flash. Participants will construct an introductory set of PowerPoint slides using a selection of the materials. An emphasis will be placed on items which have a short learning curve.

Description

Have you ever been frustrated by the challenge of getting graphics, pictures, and equations into Word or Power point? Or, can you do it but it eats up too much of your time? Did your presentation turn out very different from what you expected? This workshop will focus on the "best practices" for designing presentations which include high quality graphs and equations. There will be four parts to the workshop:

  • Generating mathematics and graphics quickly which can be used in print material or for PowerPoint, web display, etc.
  • Best Practices for using PowerPoint, and in particular for using PowerPoint effectively in generating mathematical presentations
  • Methods of animating or altering your display methods using Dreamweaver, Frontpage, or Macromedia Flash
  • Hands-on practice with Scientific Notebook, Snag-it, Excel, PowerPoint and Graphlink for TI-83; participants will create a document using the featured software and see displays of the alternate methods.

The presentation portion of the workshop will focus on demonstrating results of the software. Starting in PowerPoint, we will embed editable Excel worksheets, graphics, equations, and pictures. There will be a demonstration of the versatility of Scientific Notebook and a method of embedding the results into PowerPoint or Word. The "Best Practices" for PowerPoint will be included at this time. Next, there will be a potpourri of technological tidbits which aid in the presentation of mathematics. Included in this portion of the presentation is a demonstration of a mathematics website which utilizes graphics, animation, and interactivity and was created using Dreamweaver, Frontpage, Snag-it, Graphlink for the TI-83, Macromedia Flash, and applets available on the web. For most of the worksession, the participants will practice with Scientific Notebook, Snag-it, PowerPoint, and the TI-83 Graphlink. This will enable them to make an informed decision about the kind of presentations which can be constructed with theses tools.
