Create Your Own Videos of On-screen Activity with Camtasia

Abstract

Camtasia is a screen camcorder and video production tool. Learn to create and narrate your own technology video demonstrations. These videos are ideal for introducing new software, training new users of existing software, recording sequences to show others how to do something, or creating any kind of active documentation.

Description

The purpose of this hands-on workshop is two-fold:

  1. to demonstrate the use of the program, Camtasia, in teaching graduate on-line educational technology courses at Western Kentucky University. Providing course documents (syllabus, handouts, assignments, etc.), online tests, grades, discussion boards, and chats are all standard features of several web course programs used at universities. However, the missing element for teaching online technology courses is computer demonstration. The capability of recording these computer demonstrations has filled that void for our online technology classes.
  2. to teach participants how to create their own videos using the Camtasia software suite. TechSmith will provide each participant with a thirty-day trial version (full up-to-date version) of Camtasia.

Camtasia is a screen camcorder and video production tool. It is actually three separate program modules.

  1. Camtasia Recorder is used to record screen activity as a moving desktop video. Recorder saves the action as an AVI file. This file is actually a series of frame captures that record all movement and actions on your computer screen. You can add sound with a microphone as you record or later with the DubIt program.
  2. Camtasia Producer can be used to open the AVI file and remove unwanted frames, change the sequence of events or timing, and splice together the pieces into a longer presentation. Producer also allows you to save your file in the final output form for Windows Media Player or RealMedia as well as save it as an EXE file.
  3. DubIt is a sound editor giving you audio dubbing capabilities.
