Respondus: Are you Responding to the New Era of Testing?

By: Leanne Freeman, Loyce Miles, Denise Scifres
Track 1 - Effective Technology Based Learning Environments
Interest: Faculty :: Workshop :: Level: All

Abstract

Respondus, a test making software, takes the headache out of creating and uploading tests/quizzes/exams and question pools into Blackboard, WebCT, or eCollege. This two hour hands-on workshop will introduce participants to the test making software and allow them to design sample tests/quizzes/exams and question pools using the features of Respondus, including images, video, audio, web links, and equation editor. Participants will then have the option of uploading their tests/quizzes/exams or question pools to their online class site or print for classroom use.

Description

One of the most tedious tasks of teaching online is creating the tests and question pools. Respondus, a test making software, allows the instructor to create a test/quiz/exam or question pool, import a previously designed test/quiz/exam or question pool into Respondus and publish the finished test to a course management software, such as Blackboard, WebCT and eCollege. The finished test/quiz/exam or question pool is then available through various course management software programs.

This hands-on workshop is invaluable for instructors and others interested in simplifying the test making process. Prior to Respondus, online test preparation was time consuming with questions having to be formulated one step at the time. This meant waiting for response time between submissions for each question. Respondus reduces the amount of time spent creating tests by allowing the instructor to create a text file and upload the test/quiz/exam or question pool at one time. Respondus permits the creation of both subjective and objective questions with the ability to designate the correct answers. Respondus also facilitates the use of images, video, audio, web links, and incorporates its own equation editor for math and science teachers.

Participants will create a test/quiz/exam while going step-by-step through the major functions of Respondus. The presenter will have on-site instructors who currently teach both face-to-face and online classes, allowing participants to have contact with instructors currently using Respondus. Respondus is an innovative software tool enhancing test design while permitting instructors to learn the ease of test making.
