Prepare Your Students for Online Learning or Blended Online Learning

By: Debbie Hartzell
Track 1 - Effective Technology Based Learning Environments
Interest: Faculty :: Workshop :: Level: All

Abstract

Educators are faced with task of delivering online or blended online courses to undergraduate students. The majority of the undergraduates' academic backgrounds are traditionally based-physical classroom, set schedule, textbooks, and lecture. An online or blended course provides a non-physical, non-lecture ubiquitous learning environment. How do we prepare undergraduates' for this paradigm shift, with its redefined learner roles and technology challenges? We prepare by identifying student perceptions, and then reconciling the perceptions with the realities of online learning.

Description

We can help students bridge the gap between the perceptions and realities of online environment by addressing the technical issues, learner styles, and roles of online learning. This workshop will help participants/faculty expand their knowledge of and assist their students in making the transition from the traditional classroom environment to the online environment. Participants will create a custom checklist to help them prepare students for their online or blended online course. Participants will learn about:

  • Student expectations and perceptions of online learning
  • Realities of online and blended learning
  • Technical challenges and requirements for online or blended online learning
  • Difference between traditional face-to-face learner roles and online learner roles
  • Different learner styles and how to address their different styles
  • Using this information, participants will create a checklist to prepare their students for online learning.
