Flash as an Interactive Tool for Tests and Drills

Abstract
This presentation demonstrates one of the new features of Flash MX. That is the ability to create standard objective test questions in a way that requires only minimal knowledge of the program. Furthermore, the test can be delivered and grades returned online. Also included is a look at quiz construction with a different pedagogical approach. Included are some drills created in Flash for the teaching of music fundamentals. These drills exploit additional features of the program.
Description
Flash is well known as an effective tool for animation and Web page construction. With Flash MX the capabilities of this program has been expanded to include the construction of quiz material. Through the use of the Quiz Templates and Learning Interactions an instructor can create quizzes with only a basic knowledge of Flash. Quizzes can include a variety of types of questions. These types include True or False, Multiple Choice, Fill in the Blank, Drag and Drop, Hot Objects, and Hot Spots. Furthermore, the quiz can be delivered to the students and grades returned the instructor online.
There are some pedagogical limitations to the Macromedia approach to testing. This presentation includes some test models constructed in Flash MX by the presenter that have a different approach to the testing process. In these examples, the student is allowed to review the exam questions and make changes. They may then see their score and view the questions missed with the correct answers without being able to make changes.
A third portion of this presentation includes some drills created for teaching the fundamentals of music. These examples demonstrate other uses of the capacities in Flash MX. Musical symbols are manipulated by the student to practice quick identification of pitches, clefs, rhythms etc. The drill, review, score, see errors process is also incorporated into these programs.
