Design and Implementation of a Multimedia CD-ROM-Based Directed Study Preservice Teacher Education Course

By: Timothy Morse
Track 1 - Effective Technology Based Learning Environments
Interest: Faculty :: Lecture/Presentation :: Level: All

Abstract

Dr. Morse will discuss his development and implementation of a computer-based directed study preservice teacher education course. Specifically, he will explain the procedures he followed to create the 10 multimedia CD-ROMs that comprise the course, and how his preservice teachers use the CD-ROMs. Topics to be covered include (a) rationale for course creation, (b) instructional design model used, (c) how source material was obtained, (d) equipment used to obtain source material and create CD-ROMs, (e) course implementation and student feedback, and (f) lessons learned/future directions.

Description

Educators can now use existing technologies to create multimedia instructional materials they tailor to meet their particular needs. Consequently, Dr. Morse will discuss the procedures he followed to create the 10 multimedia CD-ROMs that comprise a preservice teacher education course he teaches, which is titled, "Psychology and Education of the Exceptional Individual." This course serves as his university's introductory course to the field special education, and is the only required special education course for all regular education preservice teachers.

The CD-ROMs that comprise the course include video, graphic, text, and audio files that present the following: (a) Dr. Morse's lectures; (b) special education activities being performed in local public schools; (c) key special education documents, such as a student's individualized education program; and (d) interviews with school personnel. Thus, during his presentation Dr. Morse will discuss the following topics.

  • His rationale for creating the course.
  • The instructional design model he followed.
  • How he collaborated with K-12 school personnel from four local school districts to obtain his source material.
  • The equipment/software he used to obtain source material and create the CD-ROMs. (This will include a discussion of how Dr. Morse obtained and used a PT3 Mini-Grant from The University of Southern Mississippi's PT3 Grant to fund his course development activities.
  • The procedures he and his preservice teacher education students followed to implement/complete this directed study course.
  • Student evaluations of the course.
  • Lessons learned.
  • Plans for developing the course further.
