Track 1 - Effective Technology-Based Learning Resources
Session Type - Lecture/Presentation

Abstract

Technology and pedagogy are converging in the 21st Century to create a
dynamic learning environment replete with opportunities and obstacles. This
convergence, known as distance learning, has gained rapid momentum for both
the Academy and the Corporation (Carr, 2001). Distance learning is viewed by
both as a means of gaining competitive advantage in the global marketplace
but raises questions about satisfaction and doubts of profitability
(Blumenstyk, 2001A and B; Cass, 2001; Mangan, 2001).

While university administrators, faculty and students have shown interest in
distance learning, there appears to be increased emphasis in Business
Schools to "be on-line" (e.g., Auburn, Colorado State, Tennessee
Technological University). More than their counterparts in other Colleges,
Business School faculty are encouraged to offer e-commerce courses, teach on-line, and use enhanced technology in the classroom that simulates the global business environment.

This presentation demonstrates the use of two technologies WebCT @ and Elluminate @ to enhance curiosity and student satisfaction for learning in a Distance MBA Communications course. This entry course into the Distance MBA program requires both teamwork and individual critical thinking to solve real business problems.
