Track 2 - Promoting Transformation in the Learning Environment

Abstract

Digital video production for the classroom or lab is accessible on the most modest of budgets. For less than $100 per student, class lessons, lab projects, performances, and guest lecturers can be captured and displayed as learning objects for later use.

Teachers will learn how to turn $2000 into a portable video production facility that can be used by teachers, students and volunteers. DV cameras, capture cards, editing software, and output media will be discussed in a technological field where prices keep falling as quality keeps getting better.

This session will cover both Windows and Mac platforms.

Description

The flexibility of digital video allows any classroom to utilize this medium to capture events, manipulate them into multiple playback formats, and store the data in a wide variety of media.

By using digital video, the cost of acquiring quality full-motion images is lowered. The recent strides in non-linear PC-based editing and increasing hard drive space have brought the tools of the professional broadcaster to the beginning user. Simple click and drag programs allow novice editors to bring in multiple sources (digital video, analog video, still images, and music) for a cohesive, streamlined presentation that can be placed on DVD, CD-R, web servers, and VHS tapes.
