Track 2 - Promoting Transformation in the Learning Environment
Session Type - Lecture/Presentation

Abstract

A challenge for teachers is to effectively reach students with differing learning styles. Research demonstrates that effective teaching occurs when a teacher adapts his or her approach to the students? learning styles. Cheaper computers and inexpensive user-friendly software allow teachers to provide this kind of stimulation. This case study demonstrates how to use Camtasia to integrate video and audio elements to enhance classroom presentations and impact students by addressing various learning styles in one presentation.

Description

The presentation is in a lecture and case study format. It is comprised of three parts.
During the first part of the presentation contains a mini-lecture during which the presenter will introduce and demonstrate the use of Camtasia. He will discuss learning styles and some research in the area of teaching which provides information regarding these styles and how various features of Camtasia address the needs of the student represented by the various styles. He will also include an overview of the software?s features and demonstrate its use by recording a file as the audience watches on the projection unit. The file recorded during the presentation will be played on the computer and projected to demonstrate the simplicity of the software and relatively small learning curve required to use this approach in preparing teaching resources.

During the second part of the presentation, the author will surf the internet and take the audience into one of his online classes so they can see how Camtasia can actually be used within a class session. The presenter will use portions of two Camtasia recordings to allow the audience to experience Camtasia presentations in the same way the students receive such presentations. The presenter will compare and contrast uses in both a real-time setting in the traditional classroom and in the select-at-leisure setting provided by web-based integration. During the third part of this presentation, the author will elaborate on a variety of uses in the classroom where teachers can apply the features available in Camtasia. Included in this portion of the presentation will be opportunity for audience members to brainstorm and discuss where they could possibly use video screen capture replay technology in their classrooms.
