Title: E-Portfolio Development for Students in Higher Education

Track 2 - Promoting Transformation in the Learning Environment
Session Type - Lecture/Presentation

Abstract

A rationale for the use of e-portfolios for students in higher education will be included in the presentation. A template for the development of student e-portfolios will be provided. The importance of reflection as part of the development of the e-portfolio will be emphasized. In addition, the presentation will highlight examples of electronic portfolios prepared by students from a graduate sport management program. The template could also serve as a framework for students in undergraduate programs or students in other disciplines.

Description

The focus of the presentation will be the use of e-portfolios as part of the self-assessment process for students in higher education. An e-portfolio is a purposeful self-selection of artifacts to be made available to others in a digital format. It is important for students to work with a mentor during the e-portfolio development process. The digital format provides for the use of sound, text, video/audio, and scanned images to display achievements in a powerful layout that is not possible in traditional forms of assessment. The process of and rationale for selection of specific items to be included in the e-portfolio provides students with several opportunities. An awareness of the progress they have made toward achievement of their personal goals, development of skills, and growth in their chosen profession are among the opportunities inherent in the development of e-portfolios. This awareness comes about though reflection, which is perhaps the most important process during the entire experience. One aspect of reflection is to learn about self in relation to the standards and expectations of our respective profession. For many professionals, reflection can be disturbing, as it requires one to move beyond one's comfort zone and to move toward new experiences and growth. For the student, reflection may result in the identification of new goals and new competencies that are desirable and achievable before facing the job market. The portfolio becomes an effective tool for the student to use when presenting credentials to a prospective employer. The presentation will include specific suggestions to determine the purpose of the e-portfolio and subsequently who will view the e-portfolio. Recommendations for content organization and management will be emphasized.
