Blogs and Wikis: One of these words is English... Pre-Conference
AbstractSince the early 1990’s, the Internet has caused a revolution of information exchange, allowing nearly anyone with the time to learn webpage authoring the ability to share their thoughts with the world. Well, the 21st century has brought with it the ability to do this even if you lack web authoring skills. Enter two new ways of thinking about information: the Blog and the Wiki. What are these oddly named things, and what do they mean to educational institutions? They stand to revolutionize many aspects of our info-verse: journalism, scholarly publication, group communication and collaboration, and information presentation. Join us for a workshop where we will examine both blogs and wikis, and find ways in which they can enhance academia. Who knows…you may walk out with a blog to call your own! DescriptionThis workshop will be a combination of instruction and hands-on experimentation with the web tools known as blogs or weblogs and wikis. Both blogs and wikis are forms of Content Management Systems that allow for the easy updating of webpages, with no need for HTML knowledge or design and layout skills. We will endeavor to define these tools, examine their uses, and see how they can be used in an academic setting in various ways relating to students, faculty, and staff. |
