Track 2
Promoting Learning in Online Communities
Pedagogy and Research for the Technology-Based Learning Environment

Abstract

This presentation will describe how a faculty member with little or no online experience, when challenged to develop an online course, cautiously navigated through the learning curve of transforming an on-ground course into an online course. Based on my conversations with others who are just as clueless as I was about the on-line process, I will share (along with my technical support) the journey that I made into this new teaching environment. The issues will include:

* factors to consider in developing an online course
* mechanics of developing your first online course
* advantages and disadvantages of teaching online
* online testing
* online grading
* pedagogical and technical aspects of using the discussion board
* benefits of web enhanced and online courses; i.e. testing on-line, surveys, "lecture" so that class time can spent with application of concepts

The focus will be how I, as a member of the late majority of technology adopters, have been convinced of the value of instructional technology.  I want to share the perspective of how technology is now a part of my life and the benefit this provides for my students.

Description

About a year ago I, a faculty member with little or no online experience, was given the assignment to develop an online course. I cautiously navigated through the process of transforming my previous on-ground course content into my new online course. I found that there was much to learn about the pedagogy of teaching online. Based on my conversations with others who were just as clueless as I was about the on-line process, I will share (along with my technical support) the journey that I made into this new teaching environment. I will bring up some of the issues that faculty need to consider in developing an online course ranging from the mechanics you need to learn to the pedagogical and technical issues you need to consider. I will talk about some of the advantages and disadvantages to teaching online, and will discuss several WebCT course tools and how I used them in my courses.

The focus will be how I, as a member of the late majority of technology adopters, have been convinced of the value of instructional technology.  I want to share the perspective of how technology is now a part of my life and the benefit this provides for my students.
