This workshop will focus on the many new features that have been added to PowerPoint 97 that can result in the creation of effective multimedia- enhanced course Web sites. Examples of how to implement these features will be demonstrated throughout this workshop.

Body

The World Wide Web has emerged as a growing force in the areas of computer usage and software development, particularly with the incorporation of multimedia technology. With many instructors in higher education feeling pressure to begin moving their courses to the Web, a cost-effective, efficient means of placing multimedia components onto a course Web site must be found.

To reflect the changing nature of multimedia presentations in the shadow of the World Wide Web, Microsoft PowerPoint 97 has significantly expanded the multimedia capabilities of this widely used presentation software package. The focus of this presentation will be on the many new features that have been added to PowerPoint 97 that can result in the creation of effective multimedia presentations and multimedia-enhanced course Web sites.

Three key components of PowerPoint 97 that have greatly augmented the multimedia capabilities of this software package are expanded custom animation features, action buttons and settings, and Web animation. Custom animation allows an instructor to define not just the animation effects for text, but also for video, sound, pictures, and clip art. New action buttons and settings enable an instructor to incorporate an extensive degree of interactivity beyond the traditional linear presentation. And Web animation provides an instructor with the means to save his or her presentation as a PowerPoint animation file embedded in an HTML document. This file, when viewed through an Internet browser, retains the multimedia and interactive components of the presentation.

Some of the key elements needed for the creations of multimedia World Wide Web presentations are:

Examples of how to implement these three key features will be demonstrated during this workshop. Additional features of PowerPoint 97 that will also be illustrated are voice narration, active Web links, image map authoring, and kiosk presentation.
