Proposal #56

Title: "Learning Objects" Video simulations in Introduction to Nursing Practice

Name: Mary Jane Lavender, Brenda Kerr

Audience Level: all

Audience: faculty, instructional technology specialists, general

Length: One Hour.

Abstract:
Students in the Introduction to Nursing Practice course needed guidance to enable them to learn introductory nursing skills. They needed to begin learning skills on their own time, reserving faculty time and campus laboratory space for questions and testing. In order to help students gain competency in these skills outside of class, faculty took videos from a DVD provided by their book publisher, uploaded the videos into the course WebCT shell and linked each video to a list of nursing skills. The WebCT CDROM tool was utilized so that students would be viewing the videos from the DVD, thus saving download time but still allowing the instructor to link to each video within course content pages. Students viewed these video simulations as they prepared for class and skill tests.

Description:
Students in the Introduction to Nursing Practice course have previously attended the nursing campus laboratory with minimal practice of nursing skills. Faculty recognized that students do need guidance to enable them to learn these skills. Students needed to begin learning these multi-step skills on their own time, reserving faculty time and campus laboratory space for students who have attempted the skills on their own but have additional pertinent questions to ask during class or who have indicated they are ready for evaluation of skill competence.

In order to help students gain competency in introductory nursing skills we have taken videos from a DVD provided by our book publisher, uploaded the videos into the course WebCT shell, and linked each video to a list of nursing skills that would be tested. Students can view these video simulations from any computer with an internet connection, 24/7, as they prepare for class and skill tests. The WebCT CDROM tool could not be used during the first semester of this project as the students were not required to purchase the DVD. This required students to wait for each video to download before the video could be viewed. However, students purchased their own DVD's for the spring 2005 course and the CDROM tool was utilized at that time thus saving download time but still allowing the instructor to link to each video within course content pages. After viewing and practicing the video skills independently, students attended their campus laboratory session/class where they could ask for faculty assistance or could be tested for skill competence. An additional benefit of buying the DVDs is that students and faculty will be able to use the video for progressive courses as some skills are not used in this course.
