Title: Keeping your ducks in a row:   Surviving the whirlwind tour of American Roots Music, Music of the Americas and Western Classical Music-then grabbing a taste of the Exotic sound s non western music

Abstract:
Christine Poythress, veteran teacher of large section courses -enrollments between 30 and 250 students--Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) campus, Murfreesboro, Tennessee will discuss using the WebCT web-based course management system to alleviate some of the organizational problems associated with teaching large classes in a face-to-face setting.   Topics will include using WebCT tools, and other online teaching techniques to enhance student learning while addressing multiple learning styles. She will share the results of an online extra credit survey that was administered to assess student satisfaction with online course components of the class.

Description:
The presenter will discuss how she uses WebCT to alleviate organizational problems associated with teaching large course sections such as posting all course documents, in a the course WebCT shell so that they may be downloaded at the student's convenience. Using the WebCT grade book to allow students immediate access to their scores, using WebCT drop boxes for distributing and collecting assignment materials, are among other techniques that will be discussed.

The presenter will share ideas for introducing students to WebCT. She will discuss how she organizes course materials in order to enhance student learning. Various ways of introducing students to WebCT include creating scavenger hunts and other activities that introduce students to the WebCT tools they will be using. Technical support for students will also be discussed in addition to how the presenter organized units of instruction into reusable learning modules and the components she includes in each module such as readings quizzes, listening assignments and self study components, etc.

Results of an online, extra credit survey will be discussed. The survey accessed the effectiveness and student satisfaction with WebCT components used during the course.
