Title: Changing Approaches to Instruction: Instructional Media and Multimedia Design

Name: Susan M. Simkowski, Ed. D; Michael Moore

Audience Level: all

Audience: General, Instructional Technology Specialists

Length: 1 hour

Abstract:
Instructional Media and Multimedia Design Services (IMDS) at Indiana State University (ISU) is changing the face of instruction. See examples of multimedia approaches the faculty members use at ISU to better augment instruction. Examples will include 3D IV insertion for Nursing programs, Animation used in curriculum to teach science using an Earth, Sun, and Moon relationship, and Crime Scene Investigation for the Criminology program.

Description:

Instructional Media and Multimedia Designers at Indiana State University offer a wide range of design services to faculty and staff. A creative team of designers is available to help translate ideas into visual media for Web delivery, multimedia and poster presentations, informational signs, and classroom support. The newest area of support includes visualization services. Instructional Media and Multimedia Design Services (IMDS) is a department within the Center for Instruction, Research, and Technology (CIRT). IMDS is working to create an interdisciplinary research laboratory that combines computer generated art and computer science, specifically concerning stereo visualization technologies, high speed networking, and virtual reality.

Visualization by definition is "the two or three dimensional graphical representation of data, patterns within data, or knowledge based on analysis of data patterns."  In the broadest sense, visualization is the art or science of transforming information into something comprehensible by the sense of sight.  Visualization is important because the vision-to-brain system is the fastest way humans can absorb and process large amounts of meaningful information.

CIRT provides access to state of the art visualization facilities, hardware and software support, and prototype and assist in the deployment of visualizations systems for Indiana State University faculty and students. Currently, Indiana State University is in the process of creating an on-campus facility capable of producing a stereoscopic display.  Additionally, CIRT has the ability to scan three dimensional objects in their natural environments and then render the objects to be displayed stereoscopically.
