Title: Predicting Success in the Online Environment
Name: Lucia Vanderpool
Audience Level: all
Audience: faculty, general
Length: 1 hour
Abstract:
One of the biggest concerns related to online education is the dropout rate which is markedly higher than in traditional face to face classes. If we can learn to recognize some of the characteristics that predict why some students succeed and others do not, perhaps we can use this information to improve retention. This discussion will address these concerns based on research studies as well as the presenter’s personal experiences as an online instructor and online student.
Description:
It is common knowledge that one of the biggest concerns related to online education is the dropout rate which is markedly higher than in traditional face to face classes. With the growing number of students enrolling in online programs, retention and the success of these students is a growing concern for higher education, just as it has been for traditional classroom students. If we can learn to recognize characteristics that predict why some students succeed and others do not, measures can be taken to increase the success rate for at-risk students. For this reason, it is important to consider the needs and expectations of online students.
This presentation will give a review of research studies that answer the following questions: “What are your needs and expectations as an Internet student?”, “What are students’ top expectations from an online course?”, “What do students need most from online instructors?” and “Can student characteristics determine whether or not a student will succeed in an online course?” The presenter will also discuss personal experiences and observations that have been learned as an online instructor and an online student.
Time will be allotted for discussion and questions from the participants.
