Title: ITunes U: Small College, Small Budget, Big Dreams - what we did and why we did it and did it help.

Name: Calvin Burgamy, Tami Stanko

Audience Level: all

Audience: general

Length: 1 hour

Abstract:
Agnes Scott College has contracted with Apple iTunes U. A lot of time and effort are involved, especially for a small women’s college with high expectations and limited resources.

What does having iTunes U mean to us? Will it help our faculty teaching and our students learning? Will having a content hungry application benefit the college or be a giant multi-media monkey on our back? This presentation will follow Agnes Scott’s iTunes U. dream/nightmare from start to right now.

Description:
The presentation is designed for all audiences: iTunes U.: Small College, Small Budget, and Big Dreams— what we did and why we did it and did it help?--will give administrators, staff and faculty insight into "real world" development of iTunes University at our school. We have no programmer to help install iTunes and integrate it into our Windows network and Blackboard Server. We also don’t have a production facility for producing professional audio and video. Are we crazy or what!?

Virtually all colleges and universities need an outlet for multimedia content. Faculty and students are doing more and more with iMovie, GarageBand, Windows Movie Maker and their professional software counterparts, like Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premier. File sizes are increasing to the extent that DVDs and network storage are no longer the ideal delivery method for faculty. Students also need a way to show their multimedia work to each other and for the classroom. The college itself is looking for better and more economical ways of distributing content to potential students, alums and parents. Currently DVD’s are created and mailed to prospective students. Now they can watch the same video in an application most applicants are familiar with. Parents can watch and listen to student recitals and visiting lectures. The uses of iTunes are numerous and hopefully beneficial to us. We will discuss how iTunes U. may the needs of Agnes Scott College academically and non academically. We will also discuss the ups and downs, pitfalls and pratfalls along the way. We learn from each others successes and failures. Hopefully this will help everyone to see new technology in both a humorous and realistic light.
