Title: Podcasting with the Apples's Intel-based MacBook Pro

Name: Dr. Timothy N. Burcham, Dr. Joey E. Mehlhorn, Dr. Philip Smartt

Audience Level: all

Audience: administrators, faculty, and IT Personnel

Length: 1 hour

Abstract:
Podcasting represents a new form of subscription media that has potential as an
educational tool. Educators can create podcasts which can be learning objects that
contain audio and video. If a student has subscribed to an educator’s podcast, these
learning objects can be delivered once they are posted. Creating a podcast is relatively
easy using the new MacBook Pro. This session will demonstrate the creation of a
podcast and its application in an educational setting.

Description:
Shortly after its introduction into the marketplace, the Apple iPod has dominated the
portable music industry. With over 70% of the market share, the iPod is an icon that is
easily recognized and greatly desired. It combines sophisticated styling and ease of use
with solid hardware and software. Another key to the iPod’s success is the support
application, iTunes.
Available for free for the Mac and PC, iTunes is an excellent music playback system in
its own right. However, it goes beyond just playback. iTunes allows users to store music
they own from their compact disks on their computers. They can also purchase music
through the iTunes store and manage their music collection.
In addition to music, iTunes can subscribe to podcasts. Podcasting represents a new form
of media. Anyone can create podcasts which contain audio, audio enhanced with images,
and video. If a user has subscribed to a podcast, these podcasts can be delivered
automatically once they are posted.
Think of it this way; imagine a radio or television program that you enjoy. Instead of
having to wait until it is broadcast, you subscribe to the program as a podcast. Once it is
prepared, it would be posted on the Internet. When you start iTunes, it will check for and
download any new programs (podcasts.) You could enjoy that material at that time or at
a time of your own choosing.
Creating a podcast is relatively easy using the new MacBook Pro. All the software that is
needed, the iLife suite, is pre-installed on a Mac. With the iLife suite, an educator can
easily create his or her own podcast learning objects.
This presentation will discuss: the opportunities to utilize podcasting, the potential
problems educators might face, a review of the iLife suite, and a demonstration of the
podcasting process.
