the learning management systems as well.
Description:
Collaboration is the key phrase of the day. Interaction among online
students is difficult to manage, especially in today’s digital driven society. How can we
satisfy the students digital expectations without compromising their educational needs
and learning styles? This session will illustrate some of how to encourage and manage
collaboration and interaction among your students through the use of Wikis, Blogs,
Vlogs, and Discussion Boards. It will also talk about how it can be done, the best
practices, show some examples, and discuss and illustrate some software that will enable
you to get started right away and the prices of that software. Information will also be
provided on how some learning management systems have incorporated these items or
building blocks that offer these options.
Wikipedia defines, “a wiki is a type of website that allows the visitors themselves
to easily add, remove and otherwise edit and change some available content, sometimes
without the need for registration.” It is also a great way to encourage peer comments on
topics.
Webster's New Millennium™ Dictionary of English defines a blog, “to author an
online diary or chronology of thoughts.” This is very similar to a discussion board. This
session will compare and contrast the two media and offer options that have been used by
APSU instructors in their courses. We will include information on social sites such as
MySpace and Blogger
According to PCMAG.com, a vlog is “(Video bLOG) A Weblog (blog) that
includes video clips to be downloaded and viewed immediately or transferred to a
portable player.” This session will illustrate how a vlog can be used in a variety of
courses. We will talk about YouTube and other sites that host this medium.
