Abstract:
All University of Southern Mississippi students seeking admission to a professional education program are required to demonstrate their basic technology literacy through passing the Basic Technology Literacy Exam (BTLE). The presentation provide an overview of the development of the original exam, changes made to the exam and the scoring criteria, and will provide information on pass rates and other demographic data gathered on the professional education candidates.

Description:

Beginning with the Fall Semester of 2003, the Professional Education Council of The University of Southern Mississippi has required that all students seeking admission into a professional education program demonstrate their basic technology literacy through taking and passing the Basic Technology Literacy Exam (BTLE). This presentation will provide (1) a brief background on the development of the Basic Technology Literacy Exam and the scoring rubrics; (2) a discussion of the problems encountered during the first three years of requiring, assessing and scoring the pre-professional education students' basic technology literacy; (3) a summary of the data gathered on the students' success rates on the BTLE, on selected demographics data gathered on the students, and on some interesting comparisons; and (4) a discussion of the changes made to improve the Basic Technology Literacy Exam and the scoring process based on the problems encountered and the data gathered. Time will be provided at the end of the presentation for questions and answers.
