Proposal #18

Title: Copyright the Academic Environment

Name: Diane Baird

Aud_Level: Beginning

Length: 60 minutes

Abstract: Copyright concerns, which affect educational resources and services, will be presented. Topics include a brief overview of the history of copyright, a discussion of copyright components, copyright in the electronic age, and liability issues. Web sites addressing copyright will be presented, and a bibliography of print and electronic sources will be provided.

Description: This presentation will serve as an introduction to the issue of copyright in the academic enviroment. While we cannot offer a comprehensive overview, we can familiarize our audience with the issues, and, as librarians, lead them to sources. As educators and librarians, we deal with the communication of ideas, concepts and information emobied in copyrighted works on a daily basis. More and more educational institutions offer guidelines and/or policies on copyright. The presentation intends to provide the audience with a basic understanding of copyright principles.

Specifically, print, non-print (audiovisual), and electronic media will be discussed. These discussions will begin with a brief outline of copyright history. As a basis for discussion, we will offer a definition of copyright as it applies to the academic environment. Guidelines for Fair Use and exemptions, as they apply, will be presented for various media. Copyright ownership will be outlined, including obtaining copyright and securing copyright permission. Copyright in the electronic age will be discussed emphasizing distance learning issues and the Internet. Proposed legislation will also be presented to inform the audience of current trends and their possible effect(s) for educators.

The presentation will utilize PowerPoint software and will be supported by live links to relevant Web sites. These will serve as a platform for group discussion, which will lead to a better understanding of the copyright issues. A printed bibliography including print and Internet sources will be provided.
