Abstract: Seven technical institutes combine their collective resources and take up arms in the distance education revolution. In little more than 18 months the Georgia Virtual Technical Institute has gone from an idea to a fully functioning and funded free standing educational delivery enterprise. In October 1998 the GVTI began offering its first 6 programs on the web. This presentation will explain the collaborative development process and demonstrate several of the finished products.
Description: Northwestern Technical Institute is the founding member of the Georgia Virtual Technical Institute, a consortium of seven technical colleges working together to provide asynchronous technical education opportunities. Other member institutions in the consortium are: Athens Technical Institute, Augusta Technical Institute, Altamaha Technical Institute, Macon Technical Institute, West Georgia Technical Institute, and North Georgia Technical Institute. Working together these institutions are able to offer classes leading to certificates, diplomas, and degrees on demand. Education anytime, anyplace, anywhere is accomplished by taking advantage of the worldwide connectivity of the Internet and World Wide Web.
For the past year the faculty and staff of these institutions have been working together in design teams to bring the very best thinking available to the challenge of making the GVTI a reality. On October 1, 1998 the reality was realized with the enrollment of 132 students in six web-based programs of study originating from 6 campuses. These classes lead to certificates, diplomas, and associate degrees. Programs of study offered include credit certificates in Drafting, Entrepreneurship, Instructional Technology, Medical Coding, Medical Receptionist, Microsoft Office User Specialist, and Pulp and Paper Specialist.
This presentation will present the Georgia Virtual Technical Institute Model, explain the collaborative nature of the GVTI, present the organizational structure, and discuss the infrastructure including software and hardware options. The presenters will also address the auxiliary issues related to offering online classes such as faculty training, instructional design issues, admissions, placement testing, advising, examinations, financial aid, etc.
A third part of the presentation will include demonstrations several of the online classes currently being offered. Emphasis will be on the development process including curricular and instructional design issues, selection of development software, use of alternative and or supporting types of multi media, and partnerships with third party software developers.
