Proposal #31

Title: Practical Ways to Use the Web In Your Classroom

Name: Sally Padgett Wheeler

Aud_Level: All

Length: 60 minutes

Description: I am teaching composition, poetry, and world and American literature courses in classrooms in which I use my web page and links to other web sites as tools. I have found that I spend less time hunting for resources and old handouts and work sheets. Once they are loaded or linked on my web page, they are available and organized. I spend less time in class handing out papers and giving assignments. I spend no time hunting through piles of papers on my desk for the correct paper to give to a student who missed a class. My students can review maps, directions, background information and samples just by going to my web page. The students seem to like using the page. In fact, they often remind me when I am a bit slow loading information. My ESL students, who have trouble listening and taking notes at the same time, benefit greatly from the web page.

I would like in my presentation to demonstrate examples of how I use the web page in hopes of inspiring others to do the same. I am not a very technical person, so I want to insure my audience that there is no mystery to creating and using a web page and that it does not have to be fancy. I also use a Smart Board in my classes, and if you have one there, I would like to use it in my presentation. As for length of time, I can talk as little as 30 minutes or all day long!

Abstract: Much has been proclaimed recently about web-based courses in which we teach students in far-flung electronic classrooms. I have discovered that the technology for internet courses can be used to enhance the traditional course taught in a classroom with students present. I have found that having background material, work sheets, pop quizzes, review material, enrichment materials and assignments available in class on a web page has helped me and my students. For example, I am organized, don't lose my handouts, and am able to use class time very efficiently. Students who miss class or miss something in their notes can catch up easily.
