Proposal #37

Title: Evaluating Electronic Resources

Name: Virginia Vesper

Type of session: Lecture/Presentation

Preferred Track: Track 3: Pedagogy and Technology Integration

Abstract: This session includes identifying sources of information about new
electronic resources for the library and classroom as well as reviews of these products. Once electronic resources are identified, evaluative criteria can be applied for the selection of the best electronic resources for the library or classroom.

Description: An increasing number of electronic resources are now available; in fact, the number of CD-ROMS alone is over 11,000. So, when selecting a particular product for use in the classroom or library, the choice can be confusing, especially when confronted with so many resources that are often similar in informational content. How does one judge, which is the best? This session will discuss where to find reputable reviews of electronic resources that can assist faculty and librarians in their selection. But, even though a product may receive an excellent review, it may still not be the best choice for a particular classroom or library. This session will examine evaluative
criteria that can be used for decision making. Some of the same criteria used to select books and other media can be used for electronic resources such as the integrity of the product, its authority and accuracy, as well as, its currency and scope or coverage of information. But electronic resources must also be evaluated by their search capabilities, ease of use, accessibility, unique features, documentation, and hardware considerations. The reliability
of the vendor is also important, as it the licensing agreement. And finally, the benefit to the intended audience must justify the expense. The use of these and other evaluative criteria can help faculty and librarians make informed selections that will benefit their students.
